Why is Holi Festival Celebrated ?
The night
before every Holi festival, the fire is burnt. It is called 'Holika Dahan'. The reason behind this is as
follows:-
There was once a
demon called Hiranya-kashyap, who was the king of the demons. His son Prahlad,
however, worshipped Lord Vishnu. This made his father very angry since he
wanted everyone to worship him alone. So he decided to kill Prahlad. He tried
many times to do this. Once he tried to poison him but the poison turned to
nectar in his mouth. He also tried to get elephants to run over him and
poisonous snakes to bite him. But nothing ever happened to Prahlad. Finally, he
asked his sister Holika to sit in a fire, with Prahlad on her lap. Holika had a
special shawl wrapped around her which would protect her from the fire. However,
the shawl flew off Holika wrapped itself around Prahlad, who was then saved,
while Holika was burnt.
So
the night before every Holi, the fire is burnt to remember that night when good
won over evil.
