An essay on Means of Communication

The means which help us to communicate with others, known as the means of communication. In ancient time, people used to send messages through drums, pigeons, messengers and smoke signals. These were the means to send and receive messages in those days.
There are many means of communication. Mostly We can divide them into two kinds.
1-  Personal means of communication
2- Mass communication

1-      Personal communication

A-     Postcard and Telegram -
Sending letters is the most popular means of communication. We write message on them and post them in letter-box. We have to write the complete address of the person to whom we want to send the letter. Through the post office the postman delivers these letters to the written address.
A Telegram is used to send an urgent message. We require stamps to send these letters.
B-      Telephone –
It is the most direct and quickest means of communication. We can talk directly to the person we want, by dialling his/her telephone number.
With the help of telephone, we can speak to a person living in any part of the world. Nowadays, people carry cell phones, or mobile phones i.e. the phone which you can carry anywhere.
C-      Computer -
It is the latest means of communication. We send an e-mail (electronic mail) or chat with a friend or relative living far away. The computers over the world are connected with each other through internet. We can get information of any kind and on any topic on internet.
D-     Fax Machine -
It transfers printed messages within seconds. There is a fax number, just like a phone number. Once we dial the number, we can insert our printed/written message in this machine. The person whose number we have dialled receives the copy of the same paper within seconds.

2-      Mass communication -
Computer, Newspaper, Radio, Television, etc., are used for mass communication with many people. So they are called the means of mass communication.
                A – Newspaper and Magazines -
Newspapers are the cheapest means of communication. They can reach to a very large number of people at the same time. Newspapers and magazines carry lots of information and pictures and many current and general topics. We can also carry them with us easily.
                B – Radio and Television -
Radio is a popular means of communication, especially in villages. We can send messages, news or music to a large number of people. It is also useful to those who cannot read.
                C – Television -
Television is the most popular means of communication. We can watch many national and international events live in it. It also shows the major events like a cricket match at the same time when they are happening in another corner of the world. We have cable network at homes and offices. We get many channels through the satellite, linked with this network.
