The wheel is
perhaps the greatest invention of man. The world today is moving very fast. All
the vehicles like cart, bicycle, car, bus, trains etc move on the wheels. The
air-crafts too take off and land due to wheels. Not only vehicles, but various
machines also run on the wheels.
Can you imagine
how the world would have been, if the wheel was not invented ?
Let me describe
the story of the wheel.
The early-man walked on foot. He carried his loads on his shoulders. Later, he made a sledge (a wheel-less cart), which was pulled by dogs. As there were no roads in those times, so it was difficult to go long distances on the sledges. The early-man got an idea when he saw a log of wood rolling down the slope. He placed a log under the sledge which could now move easily.

Still later the early-man shaped the log by cutting it and made small cylindrical logs. He
fitted these logs to the sledge.
Ultimately, the early-man made a wheel by cutting a slice from the round log of wood. He made
holes in the centre of the rounded logs. He attached these wheels to the
sledge. A wheeled cart was made.
The wheel made
the transportation easier. Later, potter’s wheel was made which began to be
used in making pottery. Still later, the wheel was used in spinning. Thus, the
invention of the wheel changed man’s life on the earth. Now man can go far off
places.
